How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Dental Visit

Posted on September 12, 2024

Visiting the dentist for the first time can be a little intimidating. Even adults are sometimes afraid of the dentist, let alone if this is the first appointment. So, while it can be a bit nerve-wracking for both parents and children, proper preparation can turn this experience into a positive and even fun one.

When should your child first see a dentist?

Experts recommend bringing your child to the dentist within six months of their first tooth emerging or by their first birthday at the latest.

During this visit, the dentist can provide guidance on important topics such as preventing baby bottle tooth decay, best practices for infant feeding, proper mouth cleaning techniques, teething, pacifier use, and managing finger-sucking habits.

This early visit is crucial for establishing healthy dental habits and ensuring your child’s oral development is on the right track.

How to prepare your preschooler for their dentist visit

Parents can pass their dental anxiety on to their children. Studies have shown that when one family member has a high level of dental anxiety or fear, the rest of the family has a high level as well. So, even if you aren’t a huge fan of the dentist, don’t let it show in front of your child.

Children often model the behaviour of their parents. If you project a positive attitude about going to the dentist, your child will be more likely to do the same. Encourage them to ask questions, and don’t be afraid to be open and honest about your own experiences. Below are more tips on how to prepare your child for their first dental visit.

1. Talk positively about the appointment

Let your children know it’s perfectly normal to be nervous about something new. Explain what will happen during the appointment and make sure to keep it simple and don’t include too many details. Tell them the dentist will count their teeth to check that they are healthy.  Show them pictures of the dental office and the dentist beforehand so they feel more comfortable. Avoid using words like “shot” or “pain” to describe the procedure, as this can create unnecessary fear.

2. Read books about going to the dentist

There are countless children’s books about children visiting the dentist. Incorporating these into your daily routine before the visit can help your child feel more comfortable. Seeing their favourite characters like Peppa Pig or Elmo going to the dentist can make the experience seem less foreign and scary.

3. Play games

Kids love to play pretend, so why not turn a pretend play session into a dental visit? Take turns being the dentist and the patient. Use a toothbrush as a tool to count each other’s teeth. This activity can familiarise your child with what might happen during the actual appointment and make the process feel like a game. Role-playing helps your child feel in control and reduces the fear of the unknown.

4. Bring a fluffy friend to the dentist

Allowing your child to bring a favourite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal can provide a sense of comfort and security. This can help your child to relax and be more open to the dentist. It can also help them to stay focused during the appointment.

5. Celebrate the visit

After the dental visit, plan a small reward to celebrate. This doesn’t have to be something big – a trip to the park, a special treat, or a fun activity they enjoy can work wonders. The idea is to associate the dental visit with something positive, making them look forward to their next appointment.

Bonus Tip: Educate Your Child About Oral Hygiene

Beyond preparing for the dental visit, it’s important to instill good oral hygiene habits at home. Teach your child the importance of brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Make brushing fun by letting them choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Consider playing a two-minute song while brushing to make sure they brush long enough. Establishing these habits early on will help them maintain good oral health and reduce the likelihood of dental problems.

Preparing your child for their first dental visit doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right approach, it can be a positive experience that sets the tone for a lifetime of good oral health.

Remember, the goal is to create a positive experience that makes your child feel comfortable and confident in taking care of their teeth. With these tips, you’re well on your way to ensuring your child’s first dental visit is a success!
